Harroop Kaur - Misl Co-Director

Harroop Kaur joined the Jakara Movement in 2001 when she lived in San Jose, CA and now serves on the acting board of directors.  She recently moved to NYC and has over 10 years of experience facilitating various Jakara offerings from Lalkaar to Jakara Junior's camp in the bay area.  Now living in NYC, she is excited to bring Jakara to the east coast!

As Co-Director of the NY/NJ misl, Harroop hopes to meet new faces and engage with the tri-state area sangat. She hopes to learn what makes this community excited as well as the issues that this community faces. The NY/NJ Misl aims to help bring solutions for current issues or gaps in programming, and most importantly reach out to the youth who have been disengaged and help create a space for them to explore and develop themselves, their Sikhi and their communities.

Harjiv is currently a senior at Rutgers University studying Exercise Science and Nutrition. Along with his academics, he plays for the Rutgers Men’s Volleyball Team and serves as a Resident Assistant for first year students. He takes a lot of pride in working with underprivileged children and families both locally and abroad. He has served as a public relations chair for UNICEF (United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund) and has taken numerous trips to run public health educational camps in Honduras, Guatemala, and India. This has inspired him to go into the field of Global Medicine with a focus on sports and rehab. As a founding member of the Sikh Youth Athletic Training Academy, he hopes to provide better access to sports for young children in both local and abroad communities.

“I want to be part of a mission that focuses on providing a certain platform for individuals in our community to thrive upon. If we can better the people within our own community, we can better the communities around us. As brothers and sisters, our duty is to keep this movement going.”

Simardev Singh - Misl Treasurer

Simardev Singh has been volunteering for nearly a decade in the New York City area, from volunteering at the Temple of Understanding in post 9/11 NYC to speaking more recently at schools and institutions as a certified Sikh Coalition presenter.  He joined the Jakara Movement in 2010 and has been facilitating full-day workshops and Jakara Junior’s camps throughout the Manhattan and New Jersey Area.

"After focusing my efforts on outreach, I’ve decided to adjust my focus to within our community.  I’m looking forward to encouraging engagement in our local sangat through education, research, and community outreach initiatives. I hope to do this all while balancing the books!"
