A Jakara Movement Program

Lalkaar

The Jakara Movement's annual collegiate conference — one weekend a year where Sikh college students help lead the conversation, not just sit in on it.

Why Lalkaar

The longest-running Sikh conference in the US, Lalkaar is one of a kind.

Lalkaar creates a platform where difficult, thought-provoking, and inspirational conversations take place — on topics ranging from, but never limited to, The Guru Granth Sahib: The History of the Sikh Soul, Kaur Voices: Exalt, Express, Empower, Gurdwara: Empowering Local Democracy, 1984: The Battle of Amritsar & Beyond, and Building Begampura: Confronting Caste.

Our Sikh youth come together and create a forum in which these conversations flourish, as we expand on and openly discuss issues that affect us as individuals and as a greater Panth. The conference’s longevity speaks for itself — join us as we continue these vital conversations.

None of it happens without the people who build it — facilitators leading the room, a committee running the weekend, and volunteers holding the space together.

Lead it, build it, run it

Two of the roles that make Lalkaar happen.

Facilitate

Lead Meaningful Conversations

Facilitators are the heart of Lalkaar, guiding critical conversations that shape our community. As a facilitator, you’ll lead discussions on topics ranging from Sikh history to social justice and community empowerment.

This is a unique opportunity to engage with passionate Sikh youth, share your expertise, and help create transformative experiences — working closely with the Lalkaar team to develop and deliver sessions that inspire and challenge participants.

Whether you’re an experienced educator, community leader, or passionate advocate, we welcome facilitators committed to fostering deep, meaningful dialogue and supporting the growth of our Panth.

What we’re looking for Facilitators who can create safe spaces for difficult conversations, bring expertise in relevant topics, and are committed to the growth and empowerment of Sikh youth. Experience in facilitation, education, or community organizing is preferred but not required.

Committee

Help Build the Conference

Committee members are who make Lalkaar happen — planning sessions, coordinating logistics, and holding the whole weekend together behind the scenes. You’ll work directly with Jakara staff and fellow students to shape the conference from the ground up, months before a single session begins.

It’s a hands-on, high-ownership role — fewer scripted duties, more real decisions: what we cover, who leads it, and how the weekend actually runs.

What we’re looking for Students who are organized, dependable, and invested in the conference’s success beyond their own session or weekend — comfortable taking initiative and following through on a commitment that runs longer than one event.
