UPDATE

People from both sides of the issue attended the Sutter County Board of Supervisors meeting. The issue and recommendations can be found here. They start on Page 400. Those who support the recommendations talked mostly about safety, noise, and the environment. Those who are against the recommendations were asking for a delay because they were not shown or asked about the resolutions before this week. Truck drivers also mentioned that these regulations are unfair and hurt drivers. The full video of the meeting is here. The discussion begins at 37:52. Comment from the lawyers and from the public begins at 1:00:28. You can also find Harjit Singh's full speech on Youtube.

After public comment, the Board of Supervisors approved most of the recommendations. Now the Sutter County Planning Commission will take a look at the recommendations and decide whether to keep or change them. After that, the Board of Supervisors will take a final vote to approve or reject the regulations.

Next Steps

The trucking community did not get the result it was hoping for. Now, we have to organize and come together so that our voice can be heard. We will have a town hall meeting at the end of this year to discuss the recommendations and what we would like to see happen. We will update on a day and time. Thank you for your support and let's continue working together to preserve the trucking industry in Sutter County.

On Tuesday, December 18, 2018, the Sutter County Board of Supervisors will be making a major decision about the future of trucking in the region that will have a large impact on the community. After receiving some resident complaints in 2017 about noise, traffic safety, and inadequate county roads, the Board created an ad-hoc committee to look into the problems. However, few were consulted and community input was very limited. We are seeking more opportunities to present our perspectives to the Board and committee.

The region most effected is South Yuba City, the very part of the community that is home to the largest number of truck drivers. The committee is thinking to enact numerous regulations making parking even more difficult for the region's truck drivers.

Truck driving is a vital industry for Sutter County and creating more government regulations to inhibit growth is not the right answer.

Some important facts to consider:

  • Currently the trucking industry accounts for nearly $150 million of personal income in Sutter County alone
  • The trucking sector accounts for nearly 8% of the total employment in Sutter County
  • All  industries  and  services, including Sutter County’s  agricultural  industry, are dependent on the trucking industry to move their goods from the point of production to market

Please sign the petition below and share widely to call for the Board of Supervisors of Sutter County to have more conversations about the concerns of the community before making any decisions so that we can find amicable resolutions that meet the concerns of residents without harming the economic growth sector for our Sutter County community.

Please come and have your voice heard on Tuesday, December 18th at 3pm.
