Save Punjabi at Livingston High School

UPDATE: 6/12/2019 - A group of parents and community members already met with Principal Ballinger at Livingston High School and Superintendent Alan Peterson of Merced Union High School District. While very cordial, no commitment about the maintenance of the program was given. The community feels that it was not properly notified nor consulted so that the program can continue. The past 2 weekends we went door-to-door in Livingston and shared news with the whole community. We have collected over 2000 signatures online and at the 2 Gurdwaras in Livingston. These past couple days we've met with the individual school board members, but we must prepare to mobilize the entire community for the upcoming school board meeting TODAY, Wednesday, June 12, 2019.

TODAY, Wednesday, JUNE 12 WE NEED THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY TO COME at 5pm to the Merced Union High School District Meeting at 3430 A St. Atwater, CA 95301

If you or a family member needs a ride, please come to B Street Gurdwara at 4pm and we will coordinate rides. Please plan to come with your ENTIRE family. If you have any questions don't hesitate to contact Jaspreet Kaur at 209-596-9847

SAVE PUNJABI AT LHS - This petition seeks to save the Punjabi language elective at Livingston High School. Every year over 60 students take Punjabi as a foreign language elective. The class is extremely popular and allows Livingston High students to connect to their culture and heritage.

Instead of shutting down the class, we want to expand the class and make it available to ALL LHS students that want to learn the language. By signing this petition, you are raising your voice to keep the language and make sure that LHS is a diverse, inclusive, and welcoming campus for all students.

You are making sure that the Punjabi language program, now in its 9th year and one of only 10 programs throughout the nation - keeps on growing and thriving right here at Livingston High School.

SAVE PUNJABI! This is so important for not only Punjabi youth, but for the growing populations of our Californian communities. California is beautiful because of its diversity. Let’s let our schools reflect this.

Over 9 years ago, Livingston High School was ahead of its time when it initiated a Punjabi language elective program for its students. LHS symbolically committed itself to bringing worldly academics to its students, emphasizing the importance in developing the skills to be competitive in local job markets and having the knowledge and cultural competency that serves them beyond Livingston. This program is more than a class – it’s a safe space for students to feel their identities are recognized and celebrated. By now removing Punjabi, Livingston is regressing from the tremendous strides it’s made in celebrating diversity and bringing applicable, comprehensive academic studies to its students. When schools across the state are now following in LHS’s example in instituting Punjabi language programs, LHS is removing their nearly decade old program.

    What’s next?

I taught ESL for six years and can tell you that it is very important for second and third generation Americans to stay in touch with their parents and grandparents’ linguistic culture. I also think that depriving LHS students of the opportunity to learn Punjabi is a huge mistake, given the growing predominance of India in international trade and foreign relations. LHS should be a leader in teaching Punjabi!

Instead of shutting this down, we need to expand this MORE schools across the nation so we don’t lose our language and culture that is most important to us. As a high school student myself, I wish this was available for me and others to further improve on my punjabi. Let’s keep the class and open up more punjabi language classes across the nation.
