Panjab University Protests

Panjab_Speaks.pngOver the past weeks, students at Panjab University in Chandigarh have launched powerful demonstrations defending campus democracy and student rights. The protests began after the Central Government issued a notification to overhaul the University’s governing bodies reducing elected representation and expanding bureaucratic control. Students, faculty, and alumni saw this as an attempt to erode the institution’s historic autonomy and Punjab’s voice in its own educational system. The unrest deepened when administrators asked students to sign affidavits promising not to participate in protests, an act widely condemned as unconstitutional and coercive. What began as campus discontent has now evolved into a broader movement for self-determination, accountability, and the right to dissent.

In response to sustained student organizing, and growing solidarity from teachers, farmers, and civic groups, the Centre has since rolled back the controversial governance notification. Yet, the protests continue, as students insist that meaningful autonomy must be restored and guaranteed, not temporarily withdrawn. On the ground, the atmosphere is charged with resolve: classrooms have turned into forums, and courtyards into assemblies echoing the chant, “Panjab Zindabad - Long Live Panjab” and rekindling conversations on why Chandigarh was never given to solely Punjab. Jakara Movement stands in solidarity with the students, educators, and workers who continue to defend the values of representation, transparency, and freedom that define the spirit of Punjab and of our people everywhere.
