Now up to 6 full-time and 1 part-time staff members, we serve the needs of the Sikh community up and down the state of California and beyond. Palvinder Kaur returns to the Sacramento/Yuba City region after completing her Masters in Public Health from the University of Texas at Houston. Below this message you'll see her address to the community.
Dear Saadh Sangat Ji:
It is with great pleasure that I announce my appointment as the Director of Development and Programs at the Jakara Movement! After spending the last two years to continue my education and gain greater expertise with underserved communities, I could not be happier to return home to my supportive family and our community.
As many of you know, from 2013-2015, I served as the Northern California Community Organizer with Jakara. As I reflect back over the years, I remember the exceptional programming we have created, including Bhujangan Kaur Leadership Retreat, Piram Pyaala/Kaur Voices (our open mic night), the Sikh Honor & Service Society & Nishaan. It is an honor to be doing the work we do – whether it is our collegiate conference, Lalkaar, to discuss taboos and community issues [register today!], our Jakara Junior camps to foster organic relationships amongst young adults and children, our Sikh Honor and Service Society that promotes leadership, seva (community service), and academic excellence, or our local misls working to meet the needs of the local communities. As an organization we are committed to improving the well-being of our community through grassroots initiatives.
Over the last two years I have stayed engaged and seen our amazing staff members expand and improve our misls and programs in their respective regions. I continue to be in awe of their commitment and accomplishments and am fortunate to have them as my Jakara family as I return full-time with the organization. I have also seen some of our staff leave due to various reasons and would like to acknowledge that we would not be where we are today without their efforts. [Robby-I hope you are proud of my recent coffee habits!] It is also because of the dedication of people like you (who continue to read these lengthy emails) that we are able to foster community (sangat), develop the next generation of leaders, stand for justice (niyao), and engage in service (seva).
In the years of my service with Jakara, the organization has developed to provide critical programming in the fields of education, health, and community organizing. As the Director of Development and Programs, I hope to do even more. In my new role, I plan to establish meaningful relationships with you - our volunteers, donors, and supporters - to ensure our impact on the Sikh community continues to grow. I ask you to join me in these efforts to build upon established programming and create new initiatives. I know I’m thrilled about the change and impact we continue to create together and I hope you are too! If there are any ideas or suggestions you have, or if you would like to say hello please feel free to get in touch!
Together, we are the movement.
