Degh Tegh Fateh

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa
Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!

On Sunday August 5, 2012 a gunmen entered Oak Creek Gurdwara in Wisconsin and opened fire, killing six individuals and injuring 3.  An entire community has been left devastated.  Sikhs throughout North America and the world have come together to show the Oak Creek community support.

In efforts of continuing support the Jakara Movement has created a short presentation for children that provides answers to a complex situation.  In addition to educating children about what happened, an activity to make cards for the victims' families and Oak Creek sangat follows the presentation.  We encourage anyone and everyone to present this presenatation at their local Gurdwara Sunday, August 12, 2012 (links are below).  If you have any questions or would like further clarification on the presentation and activity please contact us at: info@jakara.org and a sevadar will be in touch.

New Resources:

One of the Jakara Movement's sevadars - Aman - who is a professional social worker has created the following list of services available to our brothers and sisters in the Wisconsin Oak Creek area.  She has personally contacted each social worker and they have agreed to do pro-bono work for victims and survivors.  See the full list here.  If you'd like to get in contact with our sevadar Aman or anyone else on the matter, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Here is a post by a Jakara Movement supporter that was posted and has been quoted on the tragedy of Wisconsin and what it means not just for non-Sikhs, but also for Sikhs.

A bit more details -

Dear Gagandeep Singh,

Thank you so much for your comment and feedback. It is extremely helpful and insightful. You raise an important question – as to why we chose to make a more Sikh-specific presentation. We completely understand your hesitancy, as we can expect many non-Sikhs will be in attendance. However, this particular powerpoint is not aimed at that audience. Our brothers and sisters at SALDEF, SikhRI, and Sikh Coalition have put together much information as to “who are the Sikhs?” and it would be a waste of the sangat’s time and effort, if we were to recreate those materials that they have already produced. Our purpose is to help facilitate that “internal” conversation within our community. Once the media’s attention fades and the non-Sikhs return to their churches next week, we will still be together as a community. The powerpoint, as you suggest, is aimed at a completely Sikh audience, especially youth, but others as well – so that we can understand this tragic chapter in the larger unfolding narrative of Sikh history. From what you are describing in your particular location, it may serve better to have a general powerpoint, while the non-Sikh audience is in attendance this weekend, and maybe the powerpoint and notes that we are suggesting can be used afterwards to facilitate a Sikh-Sikh conversation. We’d love to talk to you more about it. Leave us another message with your email and number, and we’ll have one our volunteers personally get in touch with you.

Thanks again for sharing. It is through these exchanges that we can better serve the sangat. Gur Fateh!

Gagandeep Singh thank you for your comments, you’re absolutely right this presentation is meant for Sikh children only.

You can read more about the though process here

“…Still far more interesting to me – and is often the case within The Langar Hall – is how Sikhs dialogue with each other. While still important – in some ways it seems a bit less significant how Sikhs speak to non-Sikhs, when compared to how we speak to one another. National attention will wane; the media will become bored; yet, we will still be there with one another.”

Thanks for putting this presentation together in the behalf of all Sikhs. I do want to bring a few areas of refinement to attention. Since the tragic events of 8/5/12 we have seen our religion and culture projected in a positive light in the media. My fellow American friends are learning that we are a very peaceful religion that values equality, truth, and community service. I did not see any mention of these positive qualities that also are qualities of the true American culture. I think the PPT works well if it was presented to Sikhs only as we understand the religion/culture already. It may be tough to relate to by some of the Americans that are expected to be a part of Sunday service throughout the country. We should stick with the message that we have successfully presented since and deviate from it. I think mention of previous tragic events in our history is important, but first comers may question why so many different people have tried to kill the Sikhs in the past. We need to also be cognizant of terms like will they ever stop us, revolution, and victory. Someone who is trying to learn with an open mind may be turned off as it appears that we are trying to take over the world and may have mixed feelings about learning more about our religion. If this is only for the Sikhs then it will be effective. Again, thank you for doing all of the work that went into creating this very good PPT presentation and allowing me to express my opinion.
