There are many ways to express concern.
There are far fewer ways to assume risk.

This week, Jakara Movement made a deliberate choice: we put our name on the line.

As the California Department of Motor Vehicles moved to cancel nearly 20,000 immigrant commercial driver’s licenses, most groups chose caution. Statements were drafted. Conversations were held. Responsibility was deferred.

ਜੈਕਾਰਾ ਮੂਵਮੈਂਟ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਆਵਾਜ਼ ਉਠਾਈ ।

We are now a publicly named plaintiff in a class action lawsuit against the California DMV. We filed for an emergency injunction and stay to stop the state from stripping thousands of drivers of their livelihoods before a court can even review the legality of what is happening.

ਅਸੀਂ ਹੁਣ ਕੈਲੀਫ਼ੋਰਨੀਆ DMV ਦੇ ਖ਼ਿਲਾਫ਼ ਦਾਇਰ ਕੀਤੇ ਗਏ ਕਲਾਸ ਐਕਸ਼ਨ ਮੁਕੱਦਮੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਰਵਜਨਕ ਤੌਰ ‘ਤੇ ਨਾਮਜ਼ਦ ਮੁਆਵਜ਼ੀ (Plaintiff) ਹਾਂ। ਅਸੀਂ ਐਮਰਜੈਂਸੀ ਇੰਜੰਕਸ਼ਨ ਅਤੇ ਸਟੇਟ ਨੂੰ ਰੋਕਣ ਲਈ ਅਰਜ਼ੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਅਦਾਲਤ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਕਾਨੂੰਨੀ ਸਮੀਖਿਆ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਹੀ ਰਾਜ ਹਜ਼ਾਰਾਂ ਡਰਾਈਵਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਰੋਜ਼ੀ-ਰੋਟੀ ਖੋਹ ਨਾ ਸਕੇ।

That decision matters because being a plaintiff is not symbolic.

ਇਹ ਫੈਸਲਾ ਮਹੱਤਵਪੂਰਨ ਹੈ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਮੁਆਵਜ਼ੀ ਬਣਨਾ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਕਾਤਮਕ ਗੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ।

Being a plaintiff means exposure.
It means scrutiny.
It means retaliation is possible.
It means the organization itself becomes a target not just the issue.

ਮੁਆਵਜ਼ੀ ਬਣਨ ਦਾ ਮਤਲਬ ਹੈ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਆਉਣਾ।
ਇਸ ਦਾ ਮਤਲਬ ਹੈ ਨਿਗਰਾਨੀ ਅਤੇ ਜਾਂਚ।
ਇਸ ਦਾ ਮਤਲਬ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਬਦਲਾ ਵੀ ਸੰਭਵ ਹੈ।

We did it anyway. 
ਫਿਰ ਵੀ ਅਸੀਂ ਇਹ ਕੀਤਾ। ਆਪਣੀ ਆਵਾਜ਼ ਉਠਾਈ।

We would do it anyway again and again to protect many of our trucker brothers that are caught in the crosshairs of Trump's targeting both truckers and their immigration statuses. We want to protect them.

The DMV’s actions are not minor administrative corrections. They are mass terminations of livelihood rooted in the state’s own errors, carried out without hearings, without appeals, and without any lawful path for drivers to correct the record. Families are days away - just January 6, 2026, from losing jobs, homes, health insurance, and stability, not because they did anything wrong, but because the state failed and chose to shift the cost to the most vulnerable - immigrant workers.

This is exactly when community organizations are tested.

It is easy to claim you protect the community when protection costs nothing. It is easy to send premature press releases. It is harder when protection requires standing in court, placing your credibility on the record, and accepting legal and political risk so others don’t have to.

ਜਦੋਂ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਆ ਦੀ ਕੋਈ ਕੀਮਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ, ਤਦ ਭਾਈਚਾਰੇ ਦੀ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਦਾ ਦਾਅਵਾ ਕਰਨਾ ਆਸਾਨ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਅਧੂਰੇ ਜਾਂ ਜਲਦਬਾਜ਼ੀ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰੈੱਸ ਬਿਆਨ ਜਾਰੀ ਕਰਨਾ ਵੀ ਆਸਾਨ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਪਰ ਜਦੋਂ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਆ ਲਈ ਅਦਾਲਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਖੜ੍ਹਾ ਹੋਣਾ ਪਵੇ, ਆਪਣੀ ਸਾਖ ਨੂੰ ਰਿਕਾਰਡ ‘ਤੇ ਰੱਖਣਾ ਪਵੇ, ਅਤੇ ਕਾਨੂੰਨੀ ਤੇ ਰਾਜਨੀਤਿਕ ਰਿਸਕ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਿਰ ਲੈਣੇ ਪੈਣ—ਤਦ ਇਹ ਕੰਮ ਔਖਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਹੋਰ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਰਿਸਕ ਨਾ ਝੱਲਣਾ ਪਵੇ।

Jakara Movement always steps forward in this situation - whether the motorcycle bill, Genocide Resolutions, naming Jaswant Singh Khalra Elementary school, and now in this situation.

ਜੈਕਾਰਾ ਮੂਵਮੈਂਟ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਅਜਿਹੇ ਸਮਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਅੱਗੇ ਆ ਕੇ ਖੜ੍ਹੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ—ਚਾਹੇ ਮੋਟਰਸਾਈਕਲ ਬਿੱਲ ਹੋਵੇ, ਜਨਸੰਹਾਰ ( ਨਸਲਕੁਸ਼ੀ/ਜੈਨੋਸਾਈਡ) ਸੰਬੰਧੀ ਰੈਜ਼ੋਲੂਸ਼ਨ ਹੋਣ, ਜਾਂ ਹੁਣ ਇਹ ਮਸਲਾ।

Commercial drivers, especially nondomiciled Sikh and Punjabi drivers, are not an abstract population to us. They are our family. They are our members. They sit in our meetings. Their children attend our programs. Their labor holds together supply chains, school districts, transit systems, and entire regional economies. When the state moved against them, neutrality was not an option.

By becoming a plaintiff, Jakara Movement created legal standing to protect workers who are often excluded from advocacy altogether. Standing is what allows a judge to intervene. Standing is what allows a stay to be issued. Standing is what turns fear into enforceable rights.

And let’s be clear: there is real risk here.

Publicly challenging a state agency, while federal pressure looms, comes with consequences. But the alternative was worse: allowing thousands of families to absorb irreversible harm while institutions debated process.

This lawsuit is about more than commercial driver’s licenses. It is about whether immigrant workers will once again be treated as expendable when systems fail. It is about whether governance means anything when enforcing the law becomes inconvenient. And it is about whether community organizations exist to manage harm quietly OR or to fight and stop it outright.

We are seeking a stay because harm delayed is harm denied.
We are plaintiffs because representation without risk is not protection. And we are courageous because our community deserves nothing less.

We could not do it alone. We have not done it alone. We have worked long and hard with Asian Law Caucus, Deepak Ahluwalia, Jasjit Singh, Rana Laut of Bakersfield, Rajinder Singh Tanda of Stockton, and GS of Elk Grove, and many many others.

History does not remember cowardice or the cautious.
It remembers who stood up when the cost was real.
