UPDATE May 8, 2014

The Jakara Movement organized a Town Hall discussion open to the public on Saturday (April 19, 2014) at 5pm at Lodi Gurdwara (12098 N. West Lane; Lodi, CA 95240).  Nearly 150 members of the community attended and we thank them.  Mark Merin, the civil rights attorney, answered questions by the community.

On May 7, 2014 nearly 20 members of the Jakara Movement stood in solidarity with friends and family of Parminder Shergill at the Lodi City Council meeting.  Members raised their voices and concerns.  We will be continuing efforts to inform the sangat and call for justice, to make sure such incidents do not happen in the future.

See greater details of updates here.

shergill1.jpgThe Lodi Police's shooting of Parminder Singh Shergill, a Sikh-American army veteran, has raised too many questions about the police usage of lethal force.  The police account has been seriously questioned by neighbors and other eye-witnesses.  Weeks after the shooting, the Lodi Police Department has been slow to release any details of the shooting, while the family and community are demanding answers.

We urge you to sign this petition on behalf of private citizens questioning what may be overzealous police usage of lethal violence against a US war veteran, who was suffering due to his time of service.  We the undersigned are committed to make sure justice is provided for Parminder Singh Shergill, his family, and the community.

For those writing comments, we do intend to put them together and share with Parminder's family.  Please be mindful and respectful!

I am a prior service member of both the Air Force and Army where in the Air Force I was a law enforcement officer. Please challenge the police chief’s claims that an edged weapon is so dangerous that it warrants deadly force in the case involving Mr. Shergill. From the first point of contact if the officer felt that his life was in danger or if Mr. Shergill was not responding to commands to comply with officers they have the option to use other than deadly force. This would include using pepper spray or tasers if indeed they had enough defensible space between Mr. Shergill and the officers. If tasers or pepper spray was not deployed, then question how Mr. Shergill went from the park area back to the home where deputies radioed dispatch to alert the family to barricade the door without any further back-up requests by deputies. When dealing with a person suspected of mental health issues there should have been multiple deputies responding, because individuals with mental health issues can be very strong and not willing to comply and this is due to no fault of their own. I myself am bipolar and suffer from PTSD and I know that even if I take my meds as directed there are times that I can become belligerent and during those moments I become very defensive and trust no one except my wife. Officers are not taught well enough on how to deal with people that might be suffering from a mental illness and it is unacceptable to use deadly force first without exploring other options and it sounds to me from experience that they had plenty of time to go from initial contact to using other than deadly force. I would find out how far Mr. Shergill was from deputies at the time of initial contact and if he did have a knife and was within the reach of a taser, then he should have been tased. That is why law enforcement carries taser, so that they can have another non-lethal means that can reach farther than pepper spray and is more effective and again it’s non-lethal. Listen to the tapes and note that the deputy was alerting dispatch to warn the family, but he did not request further help. There should have been more deputies responding because there is safety in numbers and the more hands there are at the time of contact the less likely chance that officers would have to resort to deadly force. Please feel free to contact me via e-mail if you have any questions and again my condolences to your family. Sincerely, Albert
