Building the Movement

Why Build the Movement:

  • The Jakara Movement is the first grassroots Sikh youth organization, committed to social, health, and gender justice and equality, inspired by the vision of our Gurus.
  • We are the most inclusive Sikh organization – we do not discriminate based on caste, appearance, gender, etc.  If you say you are a Sikh, we want you on board.
  • We are building this organization from the ground up in all localities in California.  If there are Sikhs there, we want to be there.

How We Plan to Do This:
Moving to a membership structure, we hope to create an institution that is inclusive of all and that fosters channels for leadership opportunities.  Through a four-tiered work-output system, we hope to create the most transparent Sikh organization.  Dedication is rewarded and increasing responsibilities come with increasing output.  The levels are as follows:

  1. Jakara Movement Affiliate – interested in the organization and desire to become better acquainted with its functioning and Sikh activism in general. (1 year with organization)
  2. Jakara Movement Assistant – committed to the organization, invested into becoming a Sikh activist, and a regional leader.  You will begin developing into a leader through specialized leadership training sessions and by reaching out and organizing in your local community.  You will also be able to begin new projects. (3 years with organization)
  3. Jakara Movement Associate – a regional leader committed to bettering the community, advocating the movement, and furthering the organization.  You will not only continue to develop as a leader, but be actively training new leadership in your local community.  You are a project-lead for a number of existing Jakara Movement projects. (5 years with organization)
  4. Jakara Movement Board Member – Hardly the pinnacle, of the organization, the board of directors is rather the most humble position.  While you will be helping to define the vision of the Jakara Movement, all expectations of community activism and involvement remain. No task is too low. To qualify for this position, you will have shown your dedication to the community, a commitment to the principles of Gurbani, experience in engaging all sections of the community, proven trust with the organization. (7 years with organization)
